Sunflowers are heliotrope, meaning they rotate their flowers to follow the movement of the sun in the sky from east to west and then face east again at night, ready for the morning sun.
A moist environment is all the seeds need. They don't need too much water or fertilizer when germinating. They usually germinate after 3 to 4 weeks.
When to Plant Sunflowers
- It is best to sow sunflower seeds directly into the garden (or in outdoor containers) after the danger of spring frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 10 °C.
- In the northern half of the United States and Canada, this value will be between April and mid-June. In the south, this is expected to be the case in mid-March or early April.
- Sunflowers do not like their roots to be disturbed, so we recommend direct sowing rather than transplanting.
Planting sunflower seeds
- Sunflowers should be planted 1 to 1½ inches deep and about 6 inches apart after the soil has thoroughly warmed. If you wish, you can sow several seeds and thin them to the strongest competitors when the plants reach 6 inches tall.
- Give plants plenty of space, especially for low-growing varieties that branch. Make rows about 30 inches apart. (For very small varieties, plant closer together.)
- A light application of fertilizer mixed in at the time of planting will encourage strong root growth to protect them from being blown over by the wind.
- Experiment with plantings spaced over a 5 to 6 week period to continue to ensure continuous flowering.
- If you see birds scratching at the seeds, spread a net over the planted area until the seeds germinate.
