Buttercup is a perennial herb in the buttercup family. The name of the genus Buttercup comes from Latin, because the plants of the genus prefer wetlands, so the name.

Aboveground stems arising in spring, simple or few branched. Stem leaves are sessile, basal leaves have long stalks and resemble celery. Each flower stalk has one to four flowers, and buttercups are divided into potted and cut species.
