Buttercup is a perennial herb in the buttercup family. The plant is 20-50 centimeters tall, with fusiform tuberous roots, solitary stems, or a few branches; basal leaves, long-stalked, resembling celery; stem leaves are small and nearly sessile. Flowers solitary or several clustered at stem apex, multicolored in red, white, orange, and purple, double or semi-double petals. Fl. April-May. The name of the genus Buttercup comes from Latin, because the plants of the genus prefer wetlands, so the name.
